The
Pediatric Advocacy Initiative is a program of the
University of Michigan Law School, in partnership
with the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's
Hospital, Ypsilanti Health Center Pediatrics, The
Corner Health Center, and the Washtenaw County Public
Health's Maternal/Infant Health Program.
The
PAI is staffed by three attorneys and a legal assistant.
The clinical portion of the PAI is staffed by up to
twelve law students each semester who work under the
supervision of these attorneys to resolve clients'
legal issues.
What
is a medical-legal partnership?
Low-income
children experience relatively poor health outcomes
even when they receive high-quality health care. While
health care providers can recognize and treat the
ill-effects of poverty on child health, they may lack
the resources or time to confront its legal and social
causes.
Medical-legal
partnerships are an effective means to join pediatricians, health
care providers, and legal services attorneys to address
these barriers.
