About the PAI

The Pediatric Advocacy Initiative is a program of the University of Michigan Law School, in partnership with the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, Ypsilanti Health Center Pediatrics, The Corner Health Center, and the Washtenaw County Public Health's Maternal/Infant Health Program.

The PAI is staffed by three attorneys and a legal assistant. The clinical portion of the PAI is staffed by up to twelve law students each semester who work under the supervision of these attorneys to resolve clients' legal issues.

What is a medical-legal partnership?

Low-income children experience relatively poor health outcomes even when they receive high-quality health care. While health care providers can recognize and treat the ill-effects of poverty on child health, they may lack the resources or time to confront its legal and social causes.

Medical-legal partnerships are an effective means to join pediatricians, health care providers, and legal services attorneys to address these barriers.

  1. Because of their expertise in evaluating and screening, pediatric providers can spot legal issues BEFORE they become crises that harm child health.
  2. By placing lawyers directly in health care settings that families regularly visit, families can easily access critically needed legal help
  3. Since health care providers are trusted sources of information, families may be more likely to follow through with legal assistance based on a health care provider’s recommendation
  4. Medical-legal partnerships join two powerful and influential disciplines – medicine and law – to promote an advocacy agenda for low-income children

Mission and Goals

Mission:PAI seeks to improve the health and well-being of children by making primary health care settings an entry point to legal services and systemic advocacy support for low-income families

Goals:

  1. Provide direct legal assistance to low-
income patient families of our health care
    partners.
  2. Train health care providers to assess
families’ basic needs and to make
appropriate referrals to lawyers and other
    social service providers
  3. Address systemic barriers, which prevent
children from getting their basic needs met
